Yemeni court grants final defense chance to accused British intelligence spies

A Yemeni court granted espionage suspects accused of collaborating with British intelligence a final chance to present their defense. The defendants face severe sentences, with five already sentenced to death. Evidence suggests direct U.S. and British involvement in training spies and saboteurs inside Yemen.

AhlulBayt News Agency: The Specialized Criminal Division in Sana’a, chaired by Judge Abdullah Al-Najjar, held a session today in which members of an espionage cell accused of collaborating with British intelligence were granted a final opportunity to present their defense in the next hearing.

In May 2021, the Specialized Primary Criminal Court in the Capital Secretariat sentenced five defendants to death by firing squad for allegedly spying on behalf of British and American intelligence agencies.

A sixth defendant was sentenced to five years in prison in connection with the case brought by the Public Prosecution.

The defendants include:

  • Arafat Qassem Al-Hashadi
  • Ali Mohammed Al-Ja’mani
  • Basim Ali Al-Kharouja
  • Saleem Abdullah Hubaysh
  • Ayman Mujahid Hareesh

According to the indictment, the accused were involved in espionage and sabotage operations directed by CIA and British intelligence operatives within Yemeni territory. The charges were detailed in criminal case No. (537) of the year 1441 AH (Islamic calendar).

During the session, the court confronted the defendants with evidence provided by the prosecution, which indicated direct U.S. and British involvement in recruiting, training, and directing spies for sabotage missions in Yemen.

The Public Prosecution had previously presented a video recording containing detailed confessions from the defendants, tracing their involvement from initial recruitment and training to the execution of espionage operations.

The operations were reportedly supervised by the head of British intelligence, who was stationed at a coalition military base at Al-Ghaydah Airport in Mahra province.
